WoW Classic

Blizzard embarked on the unusual and complicated process of creating World of Warcraft Classic, a separate project from the ongoing game that will see a reboot to the game’s system, bringing it back to how it played when the MMORPG behemoth first came out many years ago. However, since its announcement, almost nothing has been said about it outside of the fact that it’s in development and apparently going smoothly. Today, though, we did get a tidbit of where the process is at.

Last week, a World of Warcraft Classic data build surfaced on Blizzard’s CDN, leaving many to think that a beta was on the horizon. On the official forums, community manager Bornakk squashed that hope, but did reveal that the new build was related to current alpha testing that Blizzard employees are using. He didn’t offer any other details, but it at least gave us a rough idea of where Blizzard is probably at with the project.

“I’ve got a small update here to help quell some of the rumors and let you know where we are at for WoW Classic,” he wrote. “We recently began a phase of internal employee alpha testing. The new build data that many of you have been discussing over the last few days is simply part of this process. Phases like this allow us to test out the game content along with other functionality that will be used in the live game.

“Aside from that, we don’t have any announcements to make at this time. I know all of you are very excited about this game and we thank you for your patience as we continue to develop it. More information will be coming soon!”

World of Warcraft is available now on PC. World of Warcraft Classic, whatever form it will ultimately take, is slated to come out some time this year.
