Elite: Dangerous Powerplay

Frontier Developments CEO David Braben took the time to conduct an AMA on Reddit regarding Elite: Dangerous, the online sandbox-style space sim which is currently available for PC and Xbox One (it will be out for PS4 later).

Braben answered a number of questions regarding the game. He confirmed that the Xbox One version would sync up with the PC version in terms of player base and exploration and this will occur on October 6th when the full game releases. It also seems that the Xbox One version has been well received and he also stated that more information on Horizons would be available in the coming weeks.

Note that this release date isn’t confirmed. Braben later clarified that October 6th is the date the team is currently “the one we are aiming for”.

Another query was asked regarding whether mods would be supported in the Xbox One version of Elite: Dangerous. Given games like Fallout 4 are supporting the same, would Elite: Dangerous possibly feature the same? Braben responded that, “It’s something we’ll look at, but this is a challenge on console. Certainly I cannot promise anything.”

Braben also talked a bit about Kinect and its potential, though his response pretty much summed up the device’s current status. “I think it is a great piece of kit, though of course not everyone has one any more…”

Speaking of Kinect, Elite: Dangerous supports voice communication through the motion camera. However as Braben states, “Kinect headtracking is not currently in our plans.” Sorry, Kinect fans – your time has come and gone.

An interesting query was asked about the current state of one’s commanders with one user reporting that his commander was the same in both versions. Would the Xbox One commander become the PC commander and vice versa when the game ships? Braben stated that, “Xbox is currently in the GPP (Game Preview Program), so has a ‘parallel world’ to enable testing. When we release we will sync the two worlds.”

Finally, one user inquired about Elite: Dangerous’s involvement in the Game Preview Program and how it allowed the game to come to consoles sooner than it normally would have. “The GPP is great. It brings an approach to console we haven’t seen before. More updates to come!”
